CNM’s chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC), the first such chapter in New Mexico’s history, held officer elections in early October and the votes have been tallied.
Members of the chapter were voting for five officer positions and when everything was done, Erica Volkers, Director of Educations Programs, was elected as the first President of CNM’s AAWCC chapter. Volker’s was pleased and honored with her selection.
“We’re all just very thrilled to be the first officers of the first chapter of the AAWCC in New Mexico,” said Volkers.
The President is the chief presiding officer, according to the chapter by-laws, and will preside at all meetings. She will call committee meetings and present special committees to the officers for approval.
The second office after the president is the President-Elect. Michelle Felicia Renteria, Achievement Coach, was elected to this post. Renteria expressed high ambitions for the chapter in the future: “We’re hoping to have a scholarship [one day].”
The other three positions that were filled were the Vice-President of Records, to which Miranda Evjen of Marketing, Communication and Operations was elected; Vice-President of Finance, to which Helen Ashbury of the Health, Wellness and Public Safety Department was elected; and Vice-President of Communications, to which Alexis Kerschner of Marketing, Communications and Operations was elected.
The Chapter held its second meeting on Friday, October 30. This was the first meeting where the officers presided and were able to meet the other members on an official basis. According to President Volkers, things are going well, so far, for the first AAWCC chapter here at CNM.
